The MOC welcomes submissions from authors on a variety of subjects. Articles should not simply describe an issue but provide readers with a cogent argument. If you are unsure as to whether your concept aligns with the desired content of The MOC, please contact us and we can provide you with additional consultation.
The MOC accepts only first-publications.
Graduate students and young professionals are encouraged to submit.
Formatting Your Work
To be considered for publication, articles must be between 700 and 1,200 words. In exceptional cases, we may publish longer pieces. Please submit your article as a Microsoft Word document, single-spaced with size 12, Times New Roman font.
Except for special cases authorized by The MOC’s editor, articles should not include use of personal pronouns (I, you, we, etc.).
In general, articles should conform to AP Style.
- Use only a single space between punctuation ending and beginning a sentence.
- Punctuation must be placed within quotation marks.
- Only use an acronym after having identified it. For example, the Office of the Secretary of Defense (“OSD”).
Articles must include citations. Cite via hyperlink for substantive and quantified claims. Please hyperlink the relevant verb in the sentence or the most relevant noun. All linked sources should be from reputable sources and will be reviewed.
Please submit your work with hyperlinks already included in the text. Failure to do so will produce delays in the editing process and risk rejection of the piece.
Finally, please include a 2–3 sentence bio at the end of your article.
The Submission Process
To register your interest, please email Nick Weising at nweising@navyleague.org with a brief pitch (one paragraph) describing the issue and argument that you wish to write about.
Should the concept align with the desired content of The MOC, you will receive an email with additional information on how to submit your piece. Please only submit complete articles for consideration at this stage.
Upon receipt of your complete article, it will undergo review by experts at the Center for Maritime Strategy for style and substance. Following review, you will receive a marked version of the piece, possibly including suggestions for substantive revisions.
Once any necessary changes have been made and the article has been re-submitted, your piece will be scheduled for publication dependent on The MOC’s publishing queue.
