Traditional sea mine countermeasures tend to flounder in contested environments, and the Navy is looking to add more autonomy to its demining practices.

From the Civil War to more recent conflicts, the Navy’s history has been plagued by underwater mines. Legacy vessels are often difficult to protect in hostile environments near shores and depend on human operators to render mines harmless, said Steven Wills, navalist at the Center for Maritime Strategy.
