Congressional Maritime Intensive 2023

In-person event

Between August 22 and August 24, the Center for Maritime Strategy hosted its second annual, three-day long Congressional Maritime Intensive just outside Washington D.C. The program educates congressional staffers about the history and application of U.S. maritime strategy and the implications of strategy on our nation’s defense posture, budget, and security. This year’s program included two days of discussions with maritime security experts and leaders plus a site visit to HII / Newport News shipyard. Participants represented the maritime security policy community and 12 Congressional offices – bicameral and bipartisan – and multiple offices whose members serve on the U.S. House and Senate seapower subcommittees.

Speakers included General (ret.) James L. Jones, USMC (32nd Commandant, U.S. Marine Corps and President, Jones Group International); Lieutenant General Karsten Heckl, USMC (Deputy Commandant, Combat Development, and Integration, U.S. Marine Corps); Vice Admiral (ret.) Tom Moore (Corporate Vice President, Mission Technologies, HII); Admiral (ret.) John Richardson (31st Chief of Naval Operations, U.S. Navy); P.W. Singer (Strategist, New America); Professor James R. FitzSimonds (U.S. Naval War College); Vice Admiral Francis Morely (Principal Military Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, and Acquisition, Department of the Navy); and a special visit by Navy League President Christopher Townsend.
